DALLAS — Two Texas-based companies, Charter Builders of Dallas and SpawMaxwell of Houston, will now be known collectively as Balfour Beatty Construction.

Charter Builders has been working with Balfour Beatty since 2006 and SpawMaxwell has been working with the company since 2009. Now the two companies will join Balfour Beatty under one name and operate together throughout the country.

“You can’t go where you want to go if you stay where you are,” said Robert Van Cleave, Chairman and CEO of Balfour Beatty Construction. “We’ve been in the fortunate position to be able to grow in a period of tough times. One of the reasons this growth strategy has worked is our firm commitment to a clear and distinct vision for all of the businesses within Balfour Beatty Construction.”

Balfour Beatty is a leader in commercial construction and has been named as a ‘Top 10 Green Builder’ by Engineering-News Record as well as listed on the ‘Top 100 Companies to Work For’ by Fortune Magazine.

SpawMaxwell, an interior construction company has been recognized in Texas since 1998 with major commercial and healthcare projects totaling more than 40 million square feet. They serve a strong presence in the Houston area.

Charter Builders specializes in commercial, government, criminal justice, public assembly, sports facilities, as well as significant work with K-12 and higher education projects.

Both Charter Builders and SpawMaxwell have worked together in the past and believe that local market collaboration is important for the success of the company. They worked on projects for Austin and Houston schools, including Pflugerville, Katy, Georgetown and Round Rock Independent School Districts.

The two companies will now come together and operate in Balfour Beatty’s base in the Dallas area, but the companies will not change the way they operate.

“That reputation and sentiment has not changed, but we are now speaking with a unified Balfour Beatty Construction voice,” said Steve Mechler, Division President for Balfour Beatty Construction in Houston.

Before coming on board under the Balfour Beatty name, both companies made significant strides in their respected businesses. The American Institute of Architects (AIA) has twice named Charter Builders as Dallas’ ‘Contractor of the Year.’ SpawMaxwell also received the honor of ‘Contractor of the Year’ by a Texas construction magazine in 2009.

Along with the success of the company the employees at SpawMaxwell have applauded the company for the past ten years as the ‘Best Place to Work’ in Houston. Although the name is changing the quality of work will not be affected. Balfour Beatty is becoming larger and stronger with the partnership of these two powerhouse companies.

Since the unity of the two companies under one name, Charter Builders has brought over 142 employees and SpawMaxwell an additional 152 — joining the employees already at Balfour Beatty, the company now employs a total of 2,400 people.

“More than just a name change, the rebranding signifies a shared commitment to bringing more of what we do best in each core geography to a broader segment of clients across Texas,” said Doug Jones, Regional CEO for Balfour Beatty Construction.

]]> LEWISVILLE, Texas — The Lewisville Independent School District selected Dallas-based Charter Builders as construction manager at-risk for a $40 million renovation and expansion project at Lewisville High School. SHW Group, also of Dallas, is the architectural firm designing the expansion, which is slated to last through August 2012.
Upgrades to the existing high school are part of the district’s plan to provide educational facilities that meet a growing student population. The high school presently has an enrollment of more than 3,300 students, and LISD officials expect to add 1,200 to 2,000 new students annually to the district over the next several years.

Lewisville voters approved a nearly $700 million bond package in 2008 for projects throughout the LISD, including building a $40 million ninth grade facility, constructing an $18 million new elementary school, and developing a $21 million high school stadium. Other projects include an $18 million replacement elementary school, a $38 million ninth and tenth grade facility, and $17 million in renovations to a middle school.

The Lewisville High School upgrade is the sixth project since 2008 that Charter Builders has managed for the district.

“We’ve received high marks from the district, particularly for pre-construction services and for our ability to manage construction on an accelerated schedule, with minimal disruption while school is in session,” says John O’Connor, project manager for Charter Builders.
Construction begins in October and will occur in two phases. Phase One will add 131,000-square-feet of new space to the campus, including a new competition gym, practice gymnasium, kitchen, cafeteria, band hall, and fine arts classrooms.

Phase Two will consist of building 90,000 square feet of additions, including administration offices, classrooms, and a new library, as well as 69,000 square feet of renovations to existing classrooms.
