FORT RUCKER, Ala. — Plans to replace Fort Rucker Elementary School — part of the Fort Rucker Army Base — are underway now that Orlando, Fla.-based SchenkelShultz has been selected as the project’s architect. SchenkelShultz was awarded the 133,542-square-foot project under the firm’s Indefinite Delivery/Indefinite Quantity (IDIQ) contract with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Norfolk District.

Two schools are currently located on Fort Rucker: a primary school serving pre-kindergarten through first grade and an elementary school serving second through sixth grades. The new facility would consolidate these two schools into one elementary school located on the same site. This new, larger school would comply with current building codes and help bring the school up to 21st century educational standards.

The current Fort Rucker Elementary School was built in 1963 and the Fort Rucker Primary School was built in 1972, according to an environmental assessment prepared for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Both schools have an Extended Forecast Condition Index (EFCI) Q rating of Q4 “Failing.” This means replacing both facilities would be more cost-efficient in the long term than paying steep maintenance and repair costs. For instance, most of the mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems in both schools are near the end of their operational life.

The new facility will feature the latest technologies as well as academic neighborhoods, learning studios and staff collaboration areas. Learning-impaired classrooms, flex labs, commons, performance and recreation spaces, administrative offices and storage areas will also be included as well as an art room, music suite, therapy classroom, food service area and kitchen, guidance counseling center, special education office, professional development center and health services area. The school will also incorporate movable furniture to better accommodate the planned learning studios. These integrative instruction spaces open into collaborative learning hubs and will replace traditional classrooms.

Scheduled for completion in the spring of 2018, the new school is designed to achieve LEED Silver certification.

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — The University of Florida’s new $22.8 million, state-of-the-art Heavener Hall School of Business building recently welcomed its first students. The three-story, 57,000-square-foot facility serves as the new home for 2,800 undergraduate students enrolled in the Warrington College of Business Administration and brings all college activities under the same roof for the first time.

Designed by SchenkelShultz Architecture of Orlando, Fla., in association with Robert A.M. Stern Architects of New York, Heavener Hall’s design and construction used innovative Building Information Modeling (BIM) software to reduce construction conflicts, improve efficiencies and ensure work was completed successfully within the tight footprint. It also allowed for a “smart” record model of the completed building, which was designed to reflect the Collegiate Gothic architectural style found throughout the university’s historic district.

In addition to both small- and medium-sized classrooms, the facility includes study rooms, academic advisement areas, student commons, informal collaborative zones, a first floor café, faculty offices and more. It also provides round-the-clock access to the university’s business students.

“As you move up in the building, the first floor is more student-activity centric, the second floor is student-faculty related and the third floor is more related to faculty with these specialty programs,” said J. Thomas Chandler, AIA, president and chief operating officer of SchenkelShultz Architecture, to at the project’s outset.

“This is a 21st century higher education building,” Chandler added. “The whole purpose of this new home was to create this collaborative and interactive environment for students and faculty. This gives them the opportunity to implement significant goals and objectives that the administration has for 21st century higher education.”

The building also helps meet the university’s sustainability goals and was designed to achieve LEED Gold certification. It incorporates green elements, such as highly insulated roof and walls, green glazing systems and an HVAC system that uses a chilled-beam approach. The design team also took advantage of the master campus storm-draining system already in place.

Ajax Building Corporation of Ajax, Fla., broke ground on Heavener Hall in May 2013. The building is named for James W. “Bill” Heavener, a 1970 graduate of the School of Business and current CEO of Full Sail University, who donated a substantial sum to the building’s development.

ORLANDO — SchenkelShultz Architecture recently won two first-place awards for its design of a high school and an elementary school from the Florida Educational Facilities Planners’ Association at its winter 2012 conference.

SchenkelShultz Architecture, a leading green design firm based in Orlando, Fla., won for its completion of Hernando County School Board’s Weeki Wachee High School in Weeki Wachee, Fla. They also took first place for Lake County Schools’ Sorrento Elementary School in Sorrento, Fla.

Weeki Wachee High School’s design made it the first high school to earn LEED silver certification in Florida. The two-story structure has an extended learning community and features two academic neighborhoods with a town center for athletics, dining and performing arts around a central courtyard.

Built for $48.5 million, the building is the first green school in the Hernando County School District.
More than 20 percent of the materials used for the project were sourced locally. The project installed a central plant with thermal ice storage to provide energy efficient heating and cooling for the high school. Daylight sensors were used in classrooms to reduce energy usage.

The school also implemented renewable energy methods, including roof-mounted solar water collectors that provide heating for the school’s kitchen, and water-efficiency features like fixtures and drip irrigation that reduce potable water use.

“SchenkelShultz utilized our knowledge of 21st century educational trends and understanding of how students learn to create the new space for the district,” said Brook Sherrard of SchenkelShultz Architecture. “Utilizing a ‘school within a school’ concept, the design provides a variety of ways to enhance educational flexibility.”

Sorrento Elementary School had similar design features, plus a high-efficiency central chiller system. Since it and WWHS opened in 2010, they have been recognized for their unique designs that emphasize flexibility and energy efficiency.

One unique space in the high school is the “Auditeria,” which serves as the main dining facility but can convert to a 500-seat theater. The school even has operable partitions that allow for “flex classrooms” dedicated to teaching and testing.

“The school features spaces for a child’s mind to explore, such as art, computer labs, band room and a TV production studio,” said Daniel Tarczynski of SchenkelShultz Architecture about the elementary school. “The classrooms are organized in small-scale communities to enhance identifiable neighborhoods, which reduce the scale of the school to a smaller feeling.”
