The 119,000-square-foot center, which will be built on the shore of Lake Osceola, will feature space for student organizations, gatherings, retailers, and a banquet room.

 

The center will also house a new Rathskellar restaurant.

 

Construction is currently underway, and completion is slated for August 2013, according to the firm’s statement.

The four-story project will be designed by Miami-based design firm Arquitectonica and Pittsburgh-based WTW Architects to meet LEED Silver certification.

Moss & Associates has built a wide variety of projects for the University of Miami during the past five years, including the 180,000-square-foot, $72.4 million Biomedical Research Building and a $515,000-square-foot, $68.4 million parking garage and chiller plant.

 

“This is an exciting project in that it will be an iconic element at the University of Miami Campus, a hub of communication for future University of Miami generations,” said Moss Vice President Scott Desharnais, who has overseen construction on many other University of Miami projects. “More than 200 jobs will be created during construction.”

 

Construction on the 72,000-square-foot project is underway and completion is scheduled for August of 2012.

 

The project will bring much-needed additional housing to the university, according to Moss officials.

 

The three-story, suite-style student housing complex will be built on 5.7 acres of land, with the housing units designed around a central courtyard.

 

The hall will offer single and double rooms, five resident assistant rooms and one resident staff apartment.

 

Additionally, the complex will feature a café and convenience store and a multi-purpose meeting and multimedia room.

The construction firm will work with Cannon Design as a partner for the marquee project.

 

“Cannon Design’s sense of architecture and expertise in student housing is sure to integrate today’s relevance of student living with the architectural style inspired by the original campus buildings built in the 1940s," said Moss Vice President Brett Atkinson.
