SACRAMENTO, Calif. — California Governor Jerry Brown has asked schools across the state to take immediate action in reducing water consumption. The request comes on the heels of Brown’s announcement of a $687 million drought relief package that provides funding for a number of water conservation initiatives.
BALTIMORE — The first new public school in Baltimore in the last 30 years has now opened its doors. Elmer A. Hendersen: A Johns Hopkins Partnership School and the Harry and Jeannette Weinberg Early Childhood Center, is operated by Johns Hopkins University’s School of Education and focuses on a holistic model for social and economic reform of urban neighborhoods.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — Construction on the new 73,270-square-foot Brock School of Business building at Samford University began in mid-January, with completion scheduled for fall 2015.
Davis Architects designed the building, while Hoar Construction is serving as the general contractor. Both companies are locally based.
NEW YORK, N.Y. — Construction and renovations began Feb. 11 on Bancroft Hall, a family housing residence located at the Teachers College of Columbia University.
SANTA CRUZ, Calif. — The University of California Santa Cruz is developing a state-of-the-art institute described as part museum, part teaching and research facility, and part performance space. The soon to be constructed Institute of the Arts and Sciences will offer exhibits on everything from climate change to contemporary art, and is projected to cost $32-40 million.
TOLEDO, Ohio — Sylvania School District officials awarded construction contracts on Feb. 10 for the new Mel Nusbaum Football Stadium at Southview High School in Toledo. Weather permitting, construction should begin on March 3, with completion scheduled for fall 2014.
HARRISBURG, Penn. — Pennsylvania Governor Tom Corbett, who will seek reelection this year, has announced considerable education funding increases in his upcoming budget.
“Education is the largest single item in my budget,” Corbett said Tuesday. “The increase I propose would bring direct state support of public education to $10.1 billion, more than 40 percent of state spending.”
JOPLIN, Mo. — Construction on Joplin High School and the Franklin Technology Center is about 55 to 65 percent complete, Mike Johnson, facilities director, told . Kansas City, Mo.-based DLR Group and locally based Corner Greer and Associates rebuilding both on the same campus to replace those that were struck by the May 2011 tornado that devastated the Joplin community and killed 161 people.
HARRISBURG, Penn. — Gov. Tom Corbett’s administration continues to warn that next year’s budget may have an estimated $1.2 billion deficit as a result of a spike in pension payments needed to cover decades of “unfunded liabilities.” At the same time, Pennsylvania school districts are still waiting for $1 billion in funding from the state, and citizens are not happy about it.
