During the biggest school-building boom in recent history, Broward awarded the lion’s share of more than $1 billion in construction contracts to just four companies.

School construction became a hot topic when then-School Board member Beverly Gallagher was arrested for taking payoffs from undercover agents.

Students and parents were able to 鈥渟neak a peak鈥� at Springfield Township School District鈥檚 new Erdenheim Elementary School Sept. 2. In addition to viewing the new building, students visited their classrooms and met their teachers for the upcoming school year prior to their first school day on Sept. 7.

With one week left to go before school starts, construction vehicles lined the Pine Road Elementary School parking lot Aug. 25 to put the finishing touches on the school鈥檚 $21 million expansion project.

The Springfield school board wants to receive more bids from minority businesses and, when possible, award more projects to local companies.

After several public hearings and fielding questions from the public, the 2010-11 budget for the St. Tammany Parish School Board passed unanimously Thursday night.
